Bethesda Softworks has announced that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the latest in the RPG franchise, has shipped more than 7 million units since its launch last week.

The company also revealed that more than half of the game's launch units were sold within the first 48 hours on sale, across PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 versions.

Overall, the company expects to generate more than $450 million in global retail sales from the launch units of the game alone.

During the first 24 hours of its release, the PC version of Skyrim saw over 280,000 concurrent players at its peak.

Robert Altman, CEO of ZeniMax Media, said, "We are grateful for the fans' response to Skyrim."

"Todd Howard and his team at Bethesda Game Studios have crafted a very special game. Anticipation for Skyrim has surpassed any game in our company's history, and we are pleased that sales and reviews have reflected the quality and hours of amazing gameplay it provides."

Skyrim has received critical praise from the press and gamers alike, and has earned one of the highest Metacritic ratings of the year.

I went to a midnight launch to pick up my copy and was amazed to find that at 11:30pm I could barely get into the store. By the time midnight hit, there was a line way past the store's entrance. As a long time Elder Scrolls fan I was really surprised to find so many people there. The last midnight launch I went to was Dragon age 2 and I figured that Skyrim would have roughly the same amount of people, it was about 3 times that.

Bethesda has come a long way, their fanbase and games just keep getting bigger and better.

Where i was the only Elders Scrolls fan in my circle of friends when Morrowind was released, now many people I know are playing Skyrim, even those that didn't enjoy Oblivion all that much.

(Montery Ca) The Midnight launch was packed. So due to time restraints, I decided to wait until noon the next day to pick it up. At Gamestop the next day it was still packed and only reserved copies were available. Thank god I pre-ordered my pc and xbox versions... Now I am excited to hear when the creation tools will be released.

Great Job Bethesda and congrats to your development team, from the testers to the producer.

Those long hard hours and crunching paid off great product, you should be proud!
