Officials from Disney Online has updated the press on its major new PC massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) for the company, named Pirates of the Caribbean Online
The game is now scheduled for release in 2007, following an initial announcement last year, and is confirmed to be shown at the company’s booth at E3 in May. The game will allow players to interact with movie characters such as Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, as well as allowing users to create their own custom pirate avatar, form a crew and captain a ship.
Thus far, Disney has made some use of the popular Pirates of the Caribbean franchise in video games, with only a Game Boy Advance game based on the original film and a commercially ambivalent home console and PC game published by Bethesda. Several new titles are scheduled to coincide with the new movie due this summer, however, including console titles, with the PC MMO following next year.
Pirates of the Caribbean Online
will be developed by Disney's own VR Studio, which was also responsible for the company’s existing family orientated MMORPG Toontown Online
. The new title, though, will be aimed at a broader audience, according to the firm, and is confirmed to also require a monthly subscription fee. Further information can be found at the game's official website
