Gamasutra blogs - upgraded!
by Christian Nutt on 09/13/13 05:34:00 am   Editor Blog   Featured Blogs

The following blog post, unless otherwise noted, was written by a member of Gamasutra’s community.
The thoughts and opinions expressed are those of the writer and not Gamasutra or its parent company.

Yesterday, Gamasutra launched some upgrades to its blog platform. These should make it easier for you to post, and give you a more reliable, smoother experience, one with more options. I'd like to briefly outline the changes we've made below.

New Editor. We've upgraded our blog entry form to CKEditor, which should increase both stability and browser compatibility while also performing better. This also means that we will be able to upgrade the editor regularly, making sure to stay in step with browser technology. This new editor also supports embedding of YouTube and other video formats -- a long-requested addition.

New UX. We've significantly tweaked the blog user experience to make it easier to find and manage your posts. While these changes might seem subtle, they're just as important. Click this link and you'll find your public profile and a list of your published posts. You'll also links on the top right of the page that will take you to where you can:

  • Edit your profile
  • See a list of all your blog posts, published and unpublished
  • Post a new blog

We've also made other smaller tweaks and changes to improve the experience.

Our hope is that you will find it easier to blog on Gamasutra following these changes. I'd personally love to hear your feedback about blogging on Gamasutra in the comments to this post or via email.

Something that I noticed yesterday when I posted a blog was the loss of published date controls. This caused a problem when I edited my published blog post. The date was changed from the original publish date/time to the default sql date of 1/1/1969.

Okay. Obviously, that's not how it's supposed to work. We removed date control because the date was originally assigned to a post when created, not when published, and many blogs were getting overlooked because they were published "in the past."

The oldest blog I see associated with your account is from 2009 -- so can you point me at the affected post? Either way, I will report this to our web dev team. Thanks.

I was able to fix it by unpublishing the blog and then republishing. So the bad date no longer exists. I haven't test it to see if it is still a problem.

Will date control be coming back? I've always found it useful to schedule posts ahead of time.

Our decision was to take it out of the hands of the poster, but if you want to talk to me about why you think otherwise, I'd appreciate it -- send me an email (cnutt@gamasutra.com).

I've been waiting for a preview button for some time now!
I still didn't find any bug or problems, so no complaints.
Thanks a lot and keep up the great work!!

Yep, I should have called this out -- preview was LONG overdue.

Good stuff! The formatting tools are much improved, and I'm with Igor - very psyched to see the addition of a Preview button. Definitely a step in the right direction for the blog tools.

YAY! Look forward to trying this out when I next come up with a blog post. :)

This is really great, Christian. It's easier than ever to port posts over from another Wordpress blog, too. Thanks!

Neat stuff. Something that would be *really* useful is a notification system when a thread you've commented in gets a response. Otherwise, it's too easy for conversations here to die out prematurely.

Yep, we have this in mind, and it will come in a later update. We're not done yet!

Hi, Christian - What steps would you recommend for porting from a wordpress.com blog? Tried the obvious (cut and paste of text format in the wordpress.com editor) but it didn't work at all. Any quick tips? ta Heather

sorted! pasted from text view to source view and it all looks hunky dory.
