Before Matt decided that it could be as much fun to make games as it is to play them, he spent over a decade as a communications professional. During his time at a non-profit publisher in Chicago, he designed really long books, worked on websites about really long books and managed translations of really long books. His next non-profit role was as Director of Communications for Catholic Charities CYO in San Francisco, where anything done in print, in a video, online, in newspaper, on a bus, or anywhere else, came out of Matt’s office. No matter where he was working, he always found time to play a lot of games. He’s enjoying new creative and design challenges in the roles of co-founder, writer/designer and art director at SomaSim.

We released our first game, 1849, in May 2014.

We at SomaSim have been fans of simulation games for years. Many years. We remember playing games like “Caesar”, “Civilization”, “Railroad Tycoon”, “SimCity” or “The Sims” before they had numbers after them. But, we played those great games on machines that can be overpowered by our current cell phones. We imagine our (much) younger selves, used to sitting in front of enormous Pentium II towers, basking in the glow of a CRT monitor waiting for a CD-ROM to load. We wonder what they would think of playing a game like Caesar III on a handheld device that weighs just over a pound. Since we’re still them, just (much) older, we think that sounds pretty fantastic.

It was to a degree. But at the same time, it feels like during early access, we were definitely moving forward with making the game and the game definitely got a lot better during that period. Also, I 'm not entirely sure that the delta between early access and Kickstarter ...
