The topics that fascinate me are monetization (gachas, bundles, currencies, special events) and game design that not only pushes users to pay, but which do it in engaging, not abusive way.
Heuristic evaluation is a powerful tool for analyzing possible UI/UX design drawbacks. Used mainly for apps, it may be applied to games too, and in this article I made an attempt to analyze Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes currency and IAP shop with this tool.
Game industry evolves rapidly and YoY changes may completely shift the market. Sometimes it may be useful to revise "wisdom of the past". The post contains list of GDC presentations that touch fields of monetization, retention and game design in genral.
The article is devoted to gacha - origin and how it`s differ in Japanese F2P games and Western ones. Advanced game designers will not find anything groundbreaking, but beginners in the field may find some interesting points for inspiration.
